Pennington Flash Volunteer Group Work

The Pennington Flash Volunteer Group removing birch saplings from the butterfly area on Bickershaw Ruck near the lagoon.

We took down a few hundred today, another go at it in about two weeks and that will be sorted.
Many thanks to all the troops.

Regarding the 'Bunting Hide', this used to be, and for many years was one of the best small bird hides for miles around with birds such as bullfinches, willow tits and reed buntings being abundant. Unfortunately, recently, it could more accurately be re-named 'Grey squirrel hide'. For example a couple of weeks ago I went to the hide and every available table was occupied by a squirrel eating the bird food, and the birds were finding it difficult to get a look in. Formerly there were cages on the tables, presumably installed to attempt to prevent this. Hopefully something can be done to return this hide to its former glory.

A big thank you for enclosing many of the feeding plates with a cage to keep out the squirrels. The squirrels are still around but no longer totally dominate and now many of the birds have returned.

Squirrels still a problem - bunting hide only - counted 10 in the feeding area in the morning of 2/4/2017 - taking a lion's share of the bird food and keeping the small birds away.
