Birding Sites

The area has the following sites that are good for birding. Each link leads to a description of the site, includes a map of the locality, species you might find at each site and other information.

Pennington Flash Country Park
On the map provided the entrance to the park is circled in red, with the park and flash to the north. This site is easily accessible, lying just minutes from the A580.

Wigan Flashes
A large area of ex-industrial land covering 260 hectares and containing several water bodies...

Astley Moss
The area south of the East Lancashire Road (A580) from Worsley to Glazebury, and including Cadishead and Irlam, is locally, often referred to as "The Moss"...

Hope Carr Nature Reserve
Initially an excellent project which seems to have now been put on the back burner! A site for ducks, waders, grebes, warblers etc, but sadly the lack of habitat maintenance on site is now seriously affecting the variety of species it once attracted. "Still worth a visit though."
